The purpose of this study was to comparison of the effectiveness of existential psychotherapy and compassion-focused therapy on distress tolerance in women with multiple sclerosis. This semi-experimental study was conducted with a pretest-posttest design with control group and follow-up 2 month. The statistical population of the research was all women with multiple sclerosis who referred to the multiple sclerosis association of Tehran city in summer of year 2024. Then the number of 45 women patients diagnosed based on the specialist physician were selected through purposive sampling and were randomly divided into two groups, including an existential psychotherapy group (15 women), compassion-focused therapy group (15 women) and a control group (15 women). Then the first experimental group underwent 10 sessions of 90 minute existential psychotherapy and the second experimental group underwent 10 sessions of 90 minute of compassion-focused therapy. During this period, the control group did not receive any intervention and remained on the waiting list. To collect data distress tolerance scale (DTS) of Simons and Gaher (2005). Analysis of variance with repeated measures and Bonferroni post hoc test was used for data analysis. The data analysis software was SPSS version 28. The results showed that both interventions had a significant effect on distress tolerance (P<0.05). In addition, the results of Bonferroni post hoc test showed that compassion-focused therapy is more effective than existential psychotherapy on distress tolerance (P<0.05). Based on the results of the present study, it can be said that existential psychotherapy and compassion-focused therapy can be used as a treatment method to on distress tolerance in women with multiple sclerosis and priority of use in in increase distress tolerance women with multiple sclerosis is with compassion-focused therapy.
