[English]

The present study aimed to examine the role of commanders’ managerial styles in predicting nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) among soldiers, considering the mediating role of psychological hardiness. The research design was descriptive-correlational. The statistical population consisted of all soldiers of the Islamic Republic of Iran Army in the northwestern region in 2024, from whom a sample of 264 individuals was selected through cluster random sampling. Participants completed the Self-Harm Inventory (SHI; Sansone et al., 1998), the Leadership Style Questionnaire (LSQ; Likert, 1961), and the Psychological Hardiness Scale (PHS; Kobasa et al., 1982). Data were analyzed using path analysis. The results indicated that the direct effect of the authoritative managerial style on psychological hardiness was significant and negative (β = -0.16, p < 0.01). In addition, the benevolent-authoritative managerial style showed a significant positive direct effect on psychological hardiness (β = 0.25, p < 0.01) and a significant negative direct effect on NSSI (β = -0.43, p < 0.01). Psychological hardiness also had a significant negative direct effect on NSSI (β = -0.35, p < 0.01). Furthermore, both authoritative and benevolent-authoritative managerial styles predicted NSSI indirectly through psychological hardiness (p < 0.05). Overall, the results suggest that psychological hardiness plays a mediating role in the relationship between managerial styles and nonsuicidal self-injury among soldiers. Enhancing soldiers’ psychological hardiness and promoting benevolent and supportive managerial styles among commanders may reduce the likelihood of NSSI.
