Abstract

The present study aimed to investigate the mediating role of difficulties in emotion regulation in the relationship between impulsivity, novelty-seeking, and high-risk behaviors among adolescents. This research is applied in purpose and correlational in nature. The study population consisted of all secondary school students in Zanjan during the 2023–2024 academic year. A sample of 400 students was selected through random cluster sampling and completed the research instruments, including the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (Gratz & Roemer, 2004), the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (2004), the Temperament and Character Inventory (Cloninger, 1994), and the High-Risk Behaviors Scale (Zadeh Mohammadi & Ahmadabadi, 2008). Path analysis was used to test the hypotheses. Descriptive data analysis was conducted using SPSS version 27, and inferential data analysis was performed using SmartPLS version 4. The results indicated that the direct effects of impulsivity, novelty-seeking, and difficulties in emotion regulation on high-risk behaviors, as well as the direct effect of impulsivity on difficulties in emotion regulation, were significant (p < 0.05). The indirect effect of impulsivity on high-risk behaviors mediated by difficulties in emotion regulation was also significant (p < 0.05). Based on these findings, there is a need for targeted interventions that address both impulsivity, novelty-seeking, and emotion regulation skills. Difficulties in emotion regulation serve as a key mediator in the relationship between impulsivity and high-risk behaviors in adolescents. Psychological interventions focused on teaching emotion regulation can moderate impulsivity and reduce high-risk behaviors in this age group.
