Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the serial mediating roles of individual resilience and self-compassion in the relationship between family resilience and post-traumatic growth (PTG). This study was a correlational descriptive study. The study population included hospitalized patients with severe physical illnesses in hospitals of South Khorasan province between the years 2019 and 2024. 269 individuals were selected through purposive sampling and completed online the family resilience, individual resilience, self-compassion and post-traumatic growth questionnaires. The data were analyzed using Hayes' serial mediation path analysis method. The results showed that the conceptual model of research has a good fit (R=0.73, F(3,235)= 89.13, p<0.0001, R2=0.53). Also, the direct effect of family resilience (β=0.38), individual resilience (β=0.41) and self-compassion (β=0.26) was significant on the PTG. In addition, the indirect effects of family resilience on PTG with the mediation of individual resilience and with the serial mediation of individual resilience and self-compassion was significant. While, the mediation of self-compassion between family resilience and PTG was not significant. Family resilience serves as a support system that increases opportunities for growth. Individual resilience and self-compassion as individual strategies strengthen the healthier processing of traumatic experiences. In fact, these factors provide optimal conditions for PTG.
