Relationship between Personality Traits and Marital Infidelity: Mediating Role of the Quality of Marital Life

Abstract

Marital infidelity is a form of emotional relationship between one of the couples and another person outside the formal relationships, which in the long run leads to impairment to the form, content and structure of marital relationships. The present study aimed to investigate the mediating role of the quality of marital relationships between personality traits and marital infidelity. This study was conducted with a correlational method. Therefore, 300 subjects were selected from the married population of Tabriz city in 2022. They were assessed by NEO personality questionnaire, attitudes towards infidelity (ATIS) and quality of married life (QMI). Data were analyzed by Strucutral Equation Modeling. Results showed that neuroticism could significantly and positively explain 0.10 of the variances in marital infidelity through quality of marital life. Extroversion could significantly and negatively explain 0.09 of the variances in marital infidelity through quality of marital life. The effect of openness to experience on marital infidelity was not statistically significant through quality of marital life; By mediating quality of marital life, conscientiousness and agreeableness could negatively and significantly explain 0.11 and 0.09 of the variances in marital infidelity through quality of marital life. Therefore, quality of marital life could mediate the relationship between personality traits and marital infidelity.
