Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a skill-based knowledge enhancement program on improving the emotional and communication functions of parents with adolescent children (aged 12 to 16). To this end, 60 parents of students in Tabriz, Iran, in 2020 were selected through screening using a researcher-made questionnaire on "Parental Awareness of Adolescents’ Physical and Sexual Puberty" and randomly assigned to experimental and control groups (30 participants each). The experimental group underwent a 12-session, 45-minute skill-based knowledge enhancement program, while the control group received no intervention. Data were collected using the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ) and the Queendom Communication Skills Questionnaire in pre-test and post-test phases. Multivariate and univariate analysis of covariance revealed that the skill-based knowledge enhancement program significantly improved adaptive and non-adaptive emotion regulation strategies, reduced anxiety, and enhanced communication skills (including message exchange ability, emotional control, listening skills, insight into communication processes, assertive communication, role knowledge, communication, emotional responsiveness, emotional companionship, behavioral control, problem-solving, and overall family functioning) in parents (p < 0.05).
