Abstract

The present study aimed to determine the fit of the structural model of self-compassion with body image concerns and self-criticism mediation in students with bulimia nervosa syndrome. The present study was descriptive-correlational using structural equation modeling. The research population was all students with bulimia nervosa syndrome studying at Azad Universities in Gilan Province in the second semester of 1401-1402. 300 samples were selected through purposive sampling. Research data were collected through the Body Image Concerns (BICI) questionnaire by Littleton et al. (2005), the Thompson and Zuroff Self-Criticism Levels Scale questionnaire (2004), the Gormali, Black, Duston, Radin Bulimia nervosa questionnaire (1982) and the Reis et al. (2011) Self-Compassion Scale. The data were analyzed using structural equation analysis. Self-criticism has a direct and significant effect on body image concerns (P<0.05). Also, the results of the bootstrap test showed that self-compassion has a direct and significant effect on body image concerns (β = -0.306). Also, the indirect effect of self-compassion on body image concerns through the mediation of self-criticism (β = -0.365) was significant. The results of the bootstrap test showed that self-compassion has a negative, indirect and significant correlation with the mediator role of emotional responsiveness with body image concerns (β = -0.203). According to the results, the proposed research model has a good fit. The results of the study indicate the importance of the role of self-compassion and self-criticism on body image concerns of students with bulimia nervosa syndrome.
