The Efficacy of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy on Perceptual and Attitudinal Body Image in Individuals with Body Dysmorphic Disorder: Single Subject Clinical Trial

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of acceptance and commitment therapy on perceptual and attitudinal body image in individuals with body dysmorphic disorder. The study was conducted with multiple baseline single subject design. Using purposed sampling, three participants were selected among the women with body dysmorphic disorder referred to the psychiatric clinics of Tabriz city in 2022. They were assessed by Attitudinal Body Image Questionnaires (MBSRQ) and Perceptual Body Image Questionnaire during the baseline, treatment and follow-up periods. They received an one-hour 8 sessions of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. The findings of the research showed that acceptance and commitment therapy has a positive effect on attitudinal body image with an average reliability change index of 3.62 and recovery percentage of 58.66 and perceptual body image with an average reliability change index of 2.28 and recovery percentage of 62  in individuals with body dysmorphic disorder. The results of this research showed that Acceptance and Commitment Therapy can improve perceptual and attitudinal body image in individuals with body dysmorphic disorder. These findings have practical implications in clinical settings, which have been discussed.
