Efficacy Of Positive Psychotherapy on Cognitive Fusion and Self-Compassion in the Patients with Type-2 Diabetes

Abstract

The present study was conducted to investigate the efficacy of positive psychotherapy on cognitive fusion and self-compassion in the patients with type-2 diabetes. The research method was quasi-experimental with pretest, posttest, control group and two-month follow-up period design. The statistical population included the patients with type-2 diabetes in summer of 2021 in the Shahreza city. 34 patients with type-2 diabetes were selected through purposive sampling method and randomly accommodated into experimental and control groups. The experimental group received eight seventy-five-minute sessions of positive psychotherapy intervention during two-and-a-half months. The applied questionnaires in this study included cognitive fusion questionnaire (Gillanders et al, 2014) and self-compassion questionnaire (Neff, 2003). The data from the study were analyzed through mixed ANOVA via SPSS23 software. The results showed that positive psychotherapy has significant effect on the cognitive fusion and self-compassion in the patients with type-2 diabetes (p<0.001). According to the findings of the present study it can be concluded that the positive psychotherapy can be used as an efficient treatment to decreace cognitive fusion and improve self-compassion in the patients with type-2 diabetes through employing techniques such as positive life vision, teaching optimism and hope for the future.
