Investigating the relational model of self-continuity, purposeful life and social networks burnout and students' academic procrastination with mediated role of delay discounting

Abstract

Objectives: Procrastination is a phenomenon that has destructive consequences for most of the people and especially for students. The aim of this study was to investigate the relational model of self-continuity, purposeful life and social networks burnout on students' academic procrastination with mediated role of delay discounting.
Methods:The present study is a descriptive correlational study. The present study population consists of all students in the University of Tehran in 2021 to 2022. A sample consisting of 1056 university students were surveyed by availablity sampling method and answered Solomon and Rathblum (1984) Academic Procrastination Questionnaire, Horton Delay Activity Scale (2014), Sokol and Serper Self-Continuity Questionnaire (2020), the Scholenberg et al.'s Life Purposeful Questionnaire (2011) and the social network burnout scale of Wallen et al. (2020). Data were analyzed by path analysis using Emos software.
Results: The findings showed that the direct effect of sense of self-continuity and purposeful life on academic procrastination is negative and social network burnout effect is positively significant Finally, the results showed that the delay discounting has a mediating role in the relationship between academic procrastination and sense of continuity, purposeful life and social network burnout .
Conclusion: As a general ,delay discounting mediates plays a very important role in the components affecting procrastination.
